Blanche vividly recalls the deaths that she had to witness at Belle Reve, as she nursed elderly relations who died one by one. These memories are with her always: first Stella (Scene One) and then Mitch (Scene Six) are made to listen to them. She gives enough gruesome detail to make the impact of death felt – there is the dying woman so swollen by disease that her body would not fit in a coﬃn, but had to be ‘burned like rubbish’ (Scene One, p. 12); and the ‘blood-stained pillow-slips’ (Scene Nine, p. 88) which Blanche had to change: there were no longer any servants. Blanche dreams of being buried ‘at sea sewn up in a clean white sack’ (Scene Eleven, p. 102). Her romanticising instinct recoils from the reality of death, but the obsession is always there
