Simyacı adlı eser, İspanyadan Mısır piramitlerinin eteklerinde hazinesini aramak amacıyla giden Endülüslü bir çoban çocuğu olan Santiago’nun masalsı hikayesi anlatılmaktadır. İspanya’da yaşamakta olan Santiago gezmeye yeni yerler görmeye meraklı olduğu için okuma-yazmayı çok iyi bildiği halde çoban olmayı tercih eder. Bir gün sürüsüyle birlikte terk edilmiş bir kiliseye gelir. Burada uyuya kalır ve haftalardir gördüğü rüyanın aynısını burada görür. Çok eskiden yün satmak üzere bir tüccara gitmiş orda tüccarın kızı ile muhabbet etmiş ve ondan çok hoşlanmıştır. Tekrardan tüccara gitmek istemiştir.
