What to look for in a new computer:

*** SSD Harddrive (stands for Solid-State Drive, and SSD is contrary to HDD or Hard Disk Drive); this is like the computer's long-term memory and is where it stores files, programs, etc. 128GB is a large enough amount. Note: if a computer seems pretty cheep compared to other ones you've seen and it has a "500GB Hard Drive" it probably does *NOT* have an SSD. Double-Check this.

*** 8GB of RAM (this stands for Random Access Memory; think of it as the number of arms/hands a computer has to do tasks). You can do with less RAM, but nothing less than 4GB. I would only get less than 8GB RAM if the computer had an "SSD," but I'd try to get both (if that's in your budget).

So here are some Ideal Configurations for these two things:

1. 128 GB SSD + 8GB RAM
2. 256 GB SSD + 8GB RAM (this isn't worse than #1, it's just probably more expensive because of the SSD)
3. 128 GB SSD + 4GB RAM (this is good, too!)
4. 500 HDD + 8GB RAM (this is might be a bit slower than 1-3 because of HDD, but the 8GB RAM will probably make up for the reduction in speed)

Here is a kind of slow configuration:
1. 500GB HDD + 4GB RAM (the HDD (Hard-Disk Drive) might make the computer kind of slow)

Here are some brands and specific Models I recommend:

More Expensive End of what I would buy:
1. Dell XPS 13 (9360). They retail for probably $1000, but you would not have to really worry about what specs (SSD + RAM combos) you got. These are new and will all have SSDs and will be fast. I paid $675 (or $650?) for mine (128GB SSD + 8GB RAM).
2. Lenovo Carbon X1 (latest generation or one before). Probably closer to $1000 even on ebay.
3. Somewhat new MacBook Pro (2013-2015)

Mid Range Price
1. Lenovo ThinkPad T4XX or T5XX (fill in Xs with other numbers)
2. Older MacBook Pro (2010-2012) (~$400-$600)
