As the proposition team, we believe high school students should be required to do volunteer work in their community. We understand that the opposition team believes that volunteer work shouldn’t be required because they don’t have time to do it due to homework and afterschool jobs. They also believe that volunteer work should not be required because volunteer work isn’t considered volunteer work if it is required. To begin I would like to make a point and talk about homework. Many students have homework after school. According to the opposition team homework gives students no time to do volunteer work. So keeping that in mind, huffpost.com states that in the United States, that on average it takes students 6 hours to do their homework per week. At first that may sound like a lot, but if you break that up by 5 because there are 5 school days in a week so That would be 72 minutes so on average it would take about an hour and 12 minutes for students to do their homework. I would also like to bring up that volunteering on average takes up to an hour to 3 hours. According to Ican schools, most students get out of school at 3:00. On that note, students go to bed around 10-11 pm. This information answers that students do have enough time to do homework and volunteer. My second point I would like to make is that, according to the opposition team, students should not be required to volunteer because they have an afterschool job. While this may be true, we often forget the fact that the employment rate have decreased. Bls.com states that 29.6% out of 100% of high school students are employed. This information was recorded only a few years ago. So many high school students do not have a job. However, let just say for example, that you are a part of the 29% and have a job. Ctdol.state.de.us states that in a school week, students that are 16-18 are only allowed to work on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. This leaves students four days to do volunteer work. The last point I would like to make it that according to Jon “volunteer work isn’t volunteer work if it’s required, and that it’s an oxymoron.”
The word volunteer is being used as an adjective meaning work such as helping the elderly and homeless.
I would also like to add that as a Christian we must use the gifts God gave up and help and serve others in our community. This information can be backed up by 1 Peter 4:10-11 which says “As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever.”
