of slums. For example, in Mumbai 62% of people live in slums on the
edge of the city. This is because there is a shortage of housing and
high rates of rural-urban migration.
Another negative economic impact of development in India is
underemployment. For example, over 50% of Indians work in the
informal economy, including many children. This is because there are
a lack of well-paid jobs in India, and low levels of education mean
many people lack skills.
One positive environmental impact of development in India is new
infrastructure like water pipes. For example, 88% of people now
have access to clean water, compared to 68% in 1990, This is
because of better infrastructure provided by the government and
charities.
Another positive economic impact of development in India is FDI
(foreign direct investment) from TNCs like Coca Cola and Nike. For
example, in the first half of 2015 India attracted $31bn of FD
This is because of the Make in India' campaign and cheap labour
which attracts new companies
A final positive social impact is improved education. For example
India's literacy rate is now 74%. This is because the government has
invested in building new schools and better training for teachers.

The National Rural Health Mission is a project to improve healthcare in the 16 poores
states in India (including Bihar) More money is provided for medicines and hospitals
and there is a nurse or doctor for each local area who visits villages

A massive solar power plant is being built in the desert in
Gujurat to provide electricity to nearby villages and towns. India
is due to become the third largest producer of solar power after
the USA and China
Every 5 years India introduces a National Plan that identifies improvements to support
development. The Eleventh Plan focuses on reducing poverty and reducing the fertility
rate (the amount of babies each woman has) to 2.1 (to slow down population growth)
India is also aiming to get electricity to all villages
Improving global status
Make in India is a campaign by India's government to encourage
investment from big companies. It is trying to encourage them to
build factories in India to provide jobs and investmernt
Superpower status
India wants to have a place on the UN Security Council (a
group of the world's most powerful countries) India is
pushing for a place in this group to improve its global status
and it is also boosting military spending as well.
