1792 yılında Sultan III. Selim dönemi onarımlarında ise süslemeler ve eklentilerle yapı, bugünkü görünümünü almıştır.
Devlet işlerinin görüşüldüğü Kubbealtı, burada alınan kararların kaleme alındığı Divan-ı Hümayûn kalemleri, kararların yazıldığı defter ve belgelerin arşivlendiği Defterhane olmak üzere üç bölümden oluşur. Divan-ı Hümâyun üyeleri haftanın dört günü toplanırdı. Divan üyeleri olan sadrazam, kubbealtı vezirleri, Anadolu ve Rumeli kazaskerleri devlet işlerini görüşüp padişaha arz etmek üzere karar alır, davalara bakarlardı. İhtiyaç duyulması halinde şeyhülislam da toplantılara davet edilirdi. Divan-ı Hümayun'un diğer görevlileri; nişancı, defterdar, reis-ül küttab, tezkereciler ve kâtiplerdi. Bu toplantılarda devletin siyasi, idari, mali, örfi işleri ile halkın önemli davaları görüşülürdü. Ayrıca sadrazamın elçi kabulleri ve padişah kızlarının nikâhları da burada yapılırdı.
