When Junior was pulled from his house eight days after he got stuck under a building, people came and started interviewing him, asking him, “Were you afraid? Were you sad? Did you cry?”, he answered, “I was brave, I told them, but when the earth shook again and again, I was afraid.”, “ But in my mind I played.” When Junior said, “But in my mind I played.”, that means that he is imagining all the events that are happening in the book. With him stuck under a building for that long, he is going to want to do something so he imagines that the days are normal. On the first day he imagines himself flying kites with Oscar, “On the first day I flew my kite. And my best friend, Oscar, who was with z me when my house fell, flew his kite, too.”, and later he started a game of marbles, and he invited all the kids in the neighborhood to play, “It was the biggest game of marbles ever played in our neighborhood, in the entire country, in the entire world!”. On the fifth day Oscar and Junior were playing a game of soccer, “Oscar and I went out to play soccer with some of our friends” but then Oscar died and Junior cried, “Afterward, we sat on a bench to rest. But then Oscar felt really tired and went to sleep. He never woke up. That was the day I cried.” After Junior got pulled out he, it was the best day of his life. “I was so happy” And, “I could see the Manman and Papa and Justine, too.”
