1. Ciri-ciri Anjing Laut ;
- bertubuh besar
- berkulit licin
- habitatnya di lingkungan akuatik
- tangan (kaki depan) berukuran besar dan berbentuk sirip
- bentuk badannya menyempit ke bagian belakang
2. Ciri-ciri Gajah Laut ;
- betina tidak memiliki hidung besar seperti jantan
- pejantan lebih besar daripada betina
- nokturnal
- memikiki sepasang tulang mencuat seperti taring/gading
3. Ada 2 spesies gajah laut yang diketahui, yaitu gajah laut utara (M. angustirostris) yang hidup di laut Pasifik utara dan gajah laut selatan (M. leonina) yang hidup di sekitar kutub selatan. Selain habitat, perbedaan yang terdapat pada kedua spesies gajah laut tersebut adalah ukuran tubuhnya. Umumnya, ukuran gajah laut utara lebih kecil dibandingkan dengan gajah laut selatan. Selebihnya, mereka memiliki cara hidup yang kurang lebih serupa.
4. Anjing laut bisa sampai memakan sesamanya, seperti anjing laut jenis leopard. Sedangkan gajah laut hanya memakan hewan yang lebih kecil. Keduanya karnivora.
5. Pada awalnya, anjing laut termasuk ke dalam subordo Pinnipedia, namun sekarang kategori subordo ini telah bergeser menjadi kategori superfamilia. Saat ini, anjing laut dimasukkan ke dalam subordo Caniformia bersama famili Odobenidae (beruang laut / walrus), Otariidae (singa laut), dan Phocidae.
