-LEFT: 1. hate each other 2. Republicans/Workers 3. low wages-long hours-horrible working conditions
-RIGHT: 1. landowners/church/army
-poor thought the military was ineffective because it lost all of Spain's colonies
-rich defended church because of interests
-elections/law= rigged and favored the wealthy
-MIGUEL PRIMO DICTATORSHIP: 1. he wanted little unemployment so he decided to tax the rich more (which completely backfired) 2. lead to high inflation 3. lost support of the military and was forced to resign
-MOROCCO PROBLEMS: 1. forced Spain to try conscription 2. Semana Tragica 3. Rebels would burn down churches (bc church= corrupt)
-Spanish Republic was born and brought sweeping changes:
1. Freedom of speech
2. Women's suffrage
3. Separation of church and state
4. Military retired (disappeared)
5. Nationalized land
6. Autonomous land given own parliament
SHORT TERM CAUSES
-POLITICAL DIVISIONS = LEFT VS RIGHT or REPUBLICANS VS NATIONALISTS
-REPUBLICANS WANT: 1. massive change 2. take away power from church and military 3. take away land from rich landowners 4. more power to workers
-NATIONALISTS WANT: 1. NO change 2. keep power with church and military 3. protect wealthy 4. little power to workers
-women tended to vote right
-Casas Viejas Incident
-Right stopped planting crops which led to famine
-The BLACK TWO YEARS {Asturian Miners Strike}
-POPULAR FRONT {lefts stopped fighting one another}
-Failed military coup by Franco
-Franco took over military, seized Spanish morocco, was taken to the mainland of Spain to overthrow government
-Aragon Offensive
-Terror Bombing
