Tembikar adalah alat keramik yang dibuat oleh perajin. Tembikar dibuat dengan membentuk tanah liat menjadi suatu objek lalu dibakar pada suhu minimal 500 C. Contoh tembikar: kendi, guci, pot, piring, tempayan.
Cara pembuatan tembikar:
1. Pengambilan tanah liat Ambil yang berwarna merah kecoklatan atau putih kecoklatan.
2. Persiapan tanah liat Tanah liat disirami air lalu didiamkan 1-2 hari. Setelah itu, giling.
3. Pembentukan Menggunakan alat- alat yg disebutkan tadi. Tangan utk membentuk tanah liat sesuai bntuk yg diinginkan, kaki utk memutar perbot.
4. Penjemuran Namun sebelumnya, tembikar yg hampir jadi dihaluskan dlu lalu dijemur hingga benar-benar kering.
5. Pembakaran Tembikar dibakar berjam-jam smpe bener-bener keras agar tdk mudah pecah
6. Penyempurnaan Tembikar dicat dengan cat khusus.
Gerabah dan tembikar sebenarnya mirip, tapi berbeda fungsinya. Tembikar biasanya utk hiasan sehingga dia perlu dicat. Kalau gerabah fungsinya utk membantu kehidupan sehari-hari, jadi tanpa dicat jg tidak apa apa.
Di Indonesia, pengembangan tembikar hanya berfokus pada penjelajahan bentuk. Berbeda dengan China yang memfokuskan jg pada teknik pembakaran karena setiap perbedaan suhu dapat menghasilkan tembikar jenis tetentu. Misalnya, tembikar yg dibakar pd suhu 1500 C menghasilkan porcelain Di Indonesia, tembikar mencapai masa puncaknya pada zaman kerajaan Majapahit sekitar abad ke-14 walaupun sebenarnya kebudayaan tembikar telah brlangsung dr zaman prasejarah.Tembikar tertua di Indonesia ditemukan di Melolo, Sumba, diperkirakan dari 3500-2500 SM
