Покрај тоа што го доминира градот со својата височина, вулканот Етна е највисокиот и најактивниот вулкан, според Италијанскиот национален институт за Геофизика.
Ерупцијата во доцните часови од понеделник, започна во северо-источниот кратер, не ги остаде на збор на лујѓето што дојдоа да гледаат.
Ерупцијата се познаваше од блиските градови до вулканот - Катаниа и Таормина.
И вулканот Етна и Везув, се класифицирани од Интернационалната асоцијација за вулканолигија и Хемија од внатрешноста на Земјата, се две од 16те светски декадни вулкани, така наречени.
Овие вулкани се студирани со огромен интерес, што произлегува од нивната насилна историја, високи нивоа на активности и нивната блискост до популацијата на Сицилија.
