Jika berteman dengan orang yang shalih dapat memberikan manfaat yang sangat banyak, maka berteman dengan teman yang buruk memberikan akibat yang sebaliknya. Orang yang bersifat jelek dapat mendatangkan bahaya bagi orang yang berteman dengannya, dapat mendatangkan keburukan bagi orang yang bergaul bersamanya. Sungguh betapa banyak kaum yang hancur karena sebab keburukan-keburukan mereka, dan betapa banyak orang yang mengikuti sahabat-sahabat mereka menuju kehancuran, baik sadar ataupun tidak sadar. (Bahjatu Qulubil Abrar, 120)
Oleh karena itulah, sungguh di antara nikmat Allah yang paling besar bagi seorang hamba yang beriman adalah Allah memberinya taufiq berupa teman yang baik. Sebaliknya, di antara ujian bagi seorang hamba adalah Allah mengujinya dengan teman yang buruk. (Bahjah Qulubil Abrar, 120)
Berteman dengan orang shalih akan memperoleh ilmu yang bermanfaat, akhlak yang utama dan amal yang shalih. Adapun berteman dengan orang yang buruk akan mencegahnya dari hal itu semua.
