-Cancer: a disease that is caused by uncontrolled cell growth, it begins when the body repairs normally and breaks down while maintaining it - usually control by limit number of cell replacement but sometimes loses control = cell divide quickly
2. Explain how tumors form + 2 types (define)
-Tumors are formed by the "faulty cells" which makes clumps
Type One: Malignant: a mass of cells that destroy and invade healthy tissues
Type Two: Benign: abnormal but harmless cell mass - doesn't invade and destroy tissue and doesn't spread - can grow massive and negatively affect tissues nearby = must be removed
3. Why are cancer cells destructive, define metastasis
-Destructive because - they tear and crush nearby tissues - strangle the blood vessels - take the nutrients that healthy cells need
Metastasis: where cells travel that is very dangerous -
"normal cells divide uncontrollably" -> cancer cells join to make tumor -> cells from cancer breaks and goes to blood/lymph vessels - cancer cells gets into lymph/blood/parts of body which settle and make more tumors
4. Define carcinogens and explain four types of them
-carcinogens are "cancer-causing agents or substances" that are responsible for the damaging genes
examples
-HPV: human papillomavirus
-UA: ultraviolet and radioactivity - invisible type is from the sun
-the chemicals that are found in tobacco smoke - ex. formaldehyde, benzene, arsenic
-asbestos: material that's used to build electrical insulation
