Peanuts originated in South America, in either Peru or Brazil. Peanuts were used as sacrificial offerings, aiding in the spirit life for the Incans.
Mexico, where peanuts were also grown, was one of the places the Spanish went during the exploration of the new world. This is also where they collected peanuts, bringing them back to Spain. Two ways they were spread around the globe, were traders and explorers, who spread them to Asia and Africa. These two states were the first states to welcome peanuts into North America during the 1700s.
Once a commercial crop in the United States, they were first grown in Virginia and used mainly for oil. Two other things they were used for, were, of course, food and cocoa substitute.
In 1800, their popularity grew when PT Barnum's wagons traveled across the country, soon "Hot roasted peanuts" were being sold in vending machines. Next up, peanuts began to be popular at baseball games.
Demand for peanuts rose when farmer equipment was invented, which helped planting, cultivation, harvesting, and picking peanuts from the peanut plants. And, in the 1900s, when the boll weevil threatened the South's cotton crop, peanuts became a huge agricultural crop.
