Kejadian ini bermula dari lubang supermasive yang meledak dan mengeluarkan semburan partikel berenergi tinggi. Semburan yang begitu kuat membuat partikel tersebut menyebar hingga ratusan bahkan ribuan tahun cahaya, dan membentuk awan cerah berkilauan.
Selama beberapa juta tahun, cahaya awan bersinar begitu terang melintasi ruang. Akan tetapi kita tidak dapat melihatnya karena bentuknya tidak dalam cahaya yg bisa di lihat, namun dalam cahaya radio. Sampai akhirnya awan kehabisan energi dan memudar ke dalam kegelapan lagi.
Beberapa tahun kemudian, benturan keras terjadi di dekat awan raksasa ini ketika dua gugus galaksi bertabrakan satu sama lain. Tabrakan tersebut mengirimkan gelombang kejut yang kuat, sehingga memberikan energi tambahan yang menyebabkan awan bersinar kembali.
