the kyoto protocol is an international agreement to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emmisions in the atmosphere. the protocol is drawn up in 1997 but only came into effect on 16 february 2005. under the protocol, different countries are assigned a target to reduced their greenhouse gas emmisions. greater responsibility to reduce greenhouse gases are placed on developed countries as they are blamed for the drastic increase of greenhouse gases since the industrial revolution.
the kyoto protocol is successful in some ways. most of the countries have met or exceeded the targets set to them. these countries include united kingdom, greece and ireland. the greenhouse gases emmision is lowered 22.6 percent in 2012 as compared to 1990 which is way much more than a 5 percent commitment.
the kyoto protocol is also successful in encouraging sustainable development. the clean devlopment mechanism gives out certified emmision reduction credits to those countries who carried out emmision-reduction projects in less devloped countries. this helps to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases released in developed countries.
