Notes

It was late January, and New England has a beautiful coating of snow this early morning. I held my hand out in front of me watching as the small snowflakes melted from the warmth of my palm. Beside me, my friend of two years walked immersed in a novel she was reading.
Emery hated when I spoke to her while she was reading, but sometimes only when I was crying or really needed to talk, would she make an exception. And the other girl clearly pestering her from her concentration was Samantha. She had been twirling the same lock of hair for the past ten minutes and it was clearly starting to drive Emery crazy.
She shut her book with a loud slap and scowled over her shoulder. “Samantha,” She spoke in a crude tone. “I understand that you need help cramming for our winter finals but please stop twirling your hair for “concentration” as you speak of. It is bothersome.”
Samantha sneers playfully at her. “What are you, my mother?”
As the two begun to yap at each other, I, on the other hand, went on my merry way to the classroom. All the students wore the same morning uniform as me but very few looked decent in it. Personally, I think I looked quite well in it but I guess everyone else had a different opinion.
Heading to my desk, Madeline twirls in her chair across from me with her elbows propped on my desk, chin on one hand. “I absolutely love what you did with your hair,” She reaches across the desk to touch it and giggles. “The buns are so adorable. It reminds me of a cute mouse or that anime Samantha watches. I think it’s called… Sailor moon?”
I’ve always admired Madeline’s orange hair, it was bright like her personality. To be honest, I’ve never heard Madeline raise her voice to anyone or even lose her temper. She was always a sweetheart and it’s no wonder why a lot of the boys from the neighboring school ask her out or bring her their badges. And each time, she accepts them happily because she feels bad for rejecting them.
