Penangkalnya adalah Antidote dan Occlumency. Karena Occlumency adalah sihir untuk mempertahankan pikiran dari pengaruh luar, ini merupakan lawan dari Legillimency.
Selain itu, ramuan ini tidak dapat digunakan sebagai bukti pasti mengenai bersalah atau tidak bersalahnya seseorang. Karena Veritaserum memiliki satu kelemahan, yaitu efek dari serum ini sebenarnya hanya memberitau apa yang dipikir oleh peminumnya benar. Jadi, kewarasan dan persepsi si peminum tentang realitas juga merupakan faktor yang berpengaruh terhadap efek Veritaserum. Hal ini juga yang membuat Veritaserum berbahaya jika disalahgunakan.
Ramuan ini tadinya digunakan untuk interogasi pengadilan. Namun, tidak jadi karena ada sihir penangkalnya.
Dahulu, Veritaserum sempat digunakan ke Barty Crouch Jr pada bulan Juni 1995, ketika menyamar sebagai guru Pertahanan Terhadap Ilmu Hitam. Kesaksiannya saat di pengadilan menggunakan Veritaserum tidak aktual, karena ia jelas 'tidak waras'. Sebelum peringatan ketat dari Kementrian Sihir, Veritaserum sempat dijual oleh Mr. Mulpepper’s Apothecary seharga 3 Galleons.
