Penyu Hijau (nama latinnya : Chelonia mydas) adalah penyu laut berukuran besar yang biasa terdapat di perairan dangkal laut tropis dan subtropis. Penyu ini banyak terdapat di perairan Indonesia.
Penyu ini diberi nama penyu hijau karena kulitnya berwarna kehijauan tetapi cangkangnya berwarna orange atau kecoklatan. Dengan bobot seberat 300kg, penyu ini disebut sebagai salah satu spesies penyu terbesar. Penyu memiliki jenis kepala yang kecil dan tidak bisa ditarik masuk ke cangkang. Hewan ini bergerak dengan sangat lambat, hanya 2-3km/jam.
Makanan penyu hijau adalah alga laut,rumput laut, ubur-ubur, kepiting kecil dan sponge laut.
Penyu hijau menghabiskan waktunya didalam air tetapi sesekali mereka juga harus muncul ke permukaan air untuk menghirup udara. Saat melakukan aktivitas seperti mencari makanan, penyu hijau menyelam selama 3-5 menit kemudian muncul ke permukaan selama 3-5 detik untuk menghirup udara.
Penyu hijau berada di perairan pantai tropis dan subtropis di seluruh dunia.
Ada dua jenis penyu hijau yaitu :
1. Penyu hijau atlantik, umumnya ditemukan di pantai eropa dan amerika utara
2. Penyu hijau pasifik timur, umumnya ditemukan di pantai dari alaska hingga Chile
Masa kawin penyu ini terjadi setiap dua sampai empat tahun sekali. Seperti penyu pada umumnya, sang betina akan menggali lubang di daratan pasir, bertelur di lubang tersebut sebanyak 100-200 butir lalu menutup kembali lubang galiannya. Telur tersebut dibiarkan menetas sendiri, setelah menetas, anak-anak penyu harus berjuang sendiri untuk kembali ke laut. Ini adalah masa-masa kritis bagi penyu karena banyaknya predator yang mengincar mereka.
