Yang dilakukan sebelum membuat Horcrux adalah membunuh. Tindakan ininakan membuat jiwa pembunuh menjadi rusak secara metafisika. Bagi si Pencipta Horcrux, hal ini dimanfaatkan untuk merobek jiwa mereka yang rusak lalu dipindahkan ke sebuah objek dengan cara merapalkan sebuah mantra.
Jiwa yang tersimpan dalam Horcrux adalah jiwa ketika Horcrux tersebut dibuat. Jadi jika Horcrux dibuat di usia 17 tahun, maka jiwa yang tertanam di benda Horcrux adalah jiwa berusia 17 tahun.
Jika pembuat Horcrux terbunuh, maka dia tidak akan bisa mati karena jiwanya masih tersimpan dalam Horcrux.
Jika Horcrux dihancurkan, maka jiwa yang terkandung didalamnya akan ikut musnah.
Horcrux bisa dihancurkan dengan Fyndfire atau killing curse.
Jika pembuat Horcrux dibunuh, maka ia akan tetap hidup dengan incorporeal body. Tapi jika Horcrux nya dihancurkan, meski dia masih punya tubuh ia akan tetap musnah karena jiwa jiwanya telah dihancurkan.
