Merlin was very involved in the upbringing of Arthur. When Merlin discovered King Uther's wife Igraine was with child he asked the king to give the child to him so that the child could be raised elsewhere for Arthur was of great importance being the only descendant of King Uther. King Uther agreed seeing Merlin's wisdom and wanting to keep ARthur safe. The night on which arthur was born the king gave the child to merlin who delivered him to Sir Ector to raise for he knew he was a good man who would raise him right.
Merlin didn't abandon Arthur after that but stuck up for him and helped him be a great king. He urged the archibishop to set up the sword in the stone which validated Arthur as king when he pulled it out. The first few years of ARthurs reign Merlin advised him and helped him against those who attempted to undermind his authority.
