When the President rescinded DACA recently, he claimed that the program was an unconstitutional overreach of executive powers. He gave Congress until March 5 to continue its protections.
He later suggested that if Congress did not act he would "revisit" the March 5 deadline.
But the President cannot simply “extend” the deadline of a program he has already rescinded. And Congress is unlikely to act on DACA by March 5.
Many are of the mistaken belief that DACA protections will remain in place until March 5. This is not true.
* Anyone whose permit expires before March 5 will lose their protection and be subject to deportation.
* Anyone whose DACA permit expires after March 5 cannot renew it and will be subject to deportation.
* Anyone who has not applied for DACA is no longer eligible to apply.
I believe the only way forward is for Congress to enact a clean Dream Act. I urge you to support and co-sponsor the Dream Act to continue the protections that DACA provides. Thank you.
More than 200,000 recipients will have their DACA status expire in the window that DHS will allow renewal.
Nearly 300,000 could begin to lose their status in 2018.
More than 320,000 would lose their status from January to August 2019.
