Puberty begins when the pituitary gland releases specific hormones into your bloodstream which target your sex organs. For females, puberty begins around age 10. Males begin puberty around age 12. These differences can cause males and females of the same age to look very different. Quite often, adolescent females will be much more physically mature than their male counterparts
In girls, the ovaries are stimulated to produce a hormone called estrogen, and in boys, the testes begin producing the male hormone, testosterone.
