Chapter _ : Death of the Pharaoh

The door to Tutankhaten’s chamber burst open without warning. Startled, he looked up from his scroll and saw princess Ankhesenpaaten at the doorway, breathless. She still wore her blanket on her shoulders, and streaks of old makeup smudged on her cheeks and eyelids. “F-father”

It was strange how one word can bring so many thoughts to one's mind. Tutankhaten stopped reading and dropped the scroll where he stood. He strode across the room and snatched Ankhesenpaaten’s hand. “Take me to him.”

As they paced to the Pharaoh’s chambers they were stopped by two guards. “Let me see my father!” Ankhesenpaaten shouted, trying to squeeze in between the two men.

From beside the guard a maid got out through the narrow space, when she lifted her head she noticed the two children standing beside each other, their eyes mourning with sadness and curiosity.

“I’m sorry,” she said to the them.

Head Chief Nefertiti’s voice boomed from inside the chambers, where the once breathtaking Pharaoh resided, mourners and priests stood waiting, pale and trembling; their thin faces betraying the calm assistance needed.

“We must start the embalming immediately.”

The mummifiers made a wide ____ for the pharaoh, stepping, disdainful, apart from the prince. He watched and looked over his sister, his eyes ___.

IN THE SOOTHING SHADE OF A CANOPY MADE OF RED-DYED LINEN, the concubines and siblings gather around the senet, while Tutankhaten concentrates coolly in their midst. The women are arrayed like the petals of a blue lily, delicate and bright. They chatted idly amongst themselves as they made their pawns skip across the polished wooden squares.

Lady Gilukhipa’s voice rises above the murmurs of idle gossip. “Tutankhaten, might I remind you of the task for today?”

Tutankhaten grumbled reminded of the nightmare, along with the gasp of the concubines behind him. The fitness test was today.
