After 1950s/1960s, many of those, especially in the Southern states like Kentucky, were being treated unfairly for being "colored". They were separated from the "whites" because they were considered lower than them. They'd be forced on only parts of the bus, having certain hotels to stay at, and even separated water fountains! It started in 1954 when the Supreme Court ruled that public schools must be integrated. The Kentuckians were granted freedom in 1966 with the Kentucky Civil Rights Act, but it was too late. The demand for coal was rising and with shortages Kentucky was being looked at for their coal. Nowadays, the industry is still declining, but the growth of newer industries such as technology is rising faster and faster.
