Eventually migrated towards the US further south, then divided itself into 2 basic regions with Rio Grande river as dividing line. Typically nomadic, traveled around and never really settled in one place.
Mostly survived by eating buffalo meat and used hides as protective clothing. **

1700, large portion of Apache had migrated to the Kansas Plains. Not used to living and farming on the plains but made due by growing Watermelon, Beans, and Corn.
Weakness of not being food growing smart was overtaken by the comanche tribe. Apaches were defeated and their land was seized, forcing them to move to places like New Mex.+Arizona. Others moved farther south into Texas and parts of Mex.
1730's, Apache began fighting with Spaniards. Battles = Long and bloody and there were many deaths. 1743 spanish leader agreed to designate areas of texas for apaches to live. 1749 an apache cheif actually buried a hatchet to symbolize fighting was over. That's where the term "bury the hatchet" came from.
Developed a strong bond with the white men of the area. relationships were strong at first, apache felt protected and then things progressed and raids began to happen that included manslaughter of the apache and theft of goods and animals. in 1940 there was a record of only 35 apache Native Americans living in OK and in 1970 there was a record of 1,500 in new mexico
