- First few chapters is basically setting up whaling as the most important aspect of the novel. Ishmael foreshadows the danger of the upcoming voyage and death, through the painting of the ship getting attacked by a whale in the Spouter Inn and the Whaling Chapel where people mourn the deaths of others in whaling.
- Furthermore, New Bedford lives on the whaling industry, showing its significance, and also represents a mix of races and classes. This blending is important in the novel, as can be seen in Ishmael's relationship with Queequeg, who is a savage yet also civilized, in a state of transition. The bonds between them are compared to that of a married couple.
- The sermon and the pulpit relate the ship on a voyage to the spiritual matters of the rest of the world. Melville makes this comparison for the readers so that in the future they may compare the actual ship on its voyage to the rest of the world.
