I moved to Denver 2 years ago and up till now have been busy with grad school eating up my weekends. Now am looking to buy my first ever car so that I can actually enjoy everything Colorado has to offer! Would appreciate any advice in that direction.
Location: Denver, CO.
Price range: $4k-$8k.
New or used: Used.
Type of vehicle: Hatchback or Crossover.
Must haves: Automatic windows, able to fit skis or a bike in back.
Nice-to-haves: AWD, AC, AUX port (but I can always splice one in), decent MPG.
Desired transmission (auto/manual, etc): Auto.
Intended use: Weekend trips to the mountains for skiing/camping/hiking.
Vehicles you've already considered: Mazda Mazdaspeed3, Saturn Astra, Toyota Matrix, Scion xD, Honda CRV.
Is this your 1st vehicle: Yes. The plan is to drive it into the ground over the next 8-10 years.
Does the vehicle need to have a warranty: No.
Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: Yes.
Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: I've got the skills (was on the Formula SAE team in undergrad so built a car from scratch), but not the space (shared garage). May change a few months after I get the car if I move to a place with a garage like I plan to.
Additional Notes: I'm planning on getting this car May-ish 2018 as a graduation gift to myself, and want to get the early jump on feeling out what's in my local market before then. Not planning on using it for commuting (I take the light rail), want to use it to bring camping gear/ski equipment up to the mountains. Should be able to handle gravel/rougher roads and some snow. I'm 6'3", so I should be able to physically fit in the drivers seat. I'm pretty price conscious, and will be trying my hand at all repairs before bringing it in to a shop.
I've driven zero of the cars listed in their early-mid 2000's model years so don't really have any experience as to if they're the right ones I should be looking at. How am I doing?
