Key terms:
-history History is the study of the past. (Historians are people who study the past.)
-culture Culture is the knowledge, beliefs, customs, and values of a group of people.
-archaeology Archaeology is the study of the past based on what people left behind.
-fossil A fossil is a part or imprint of something that was once alive.
-artifacts Artifacts are objects created by and used by humans.
-primary source A primary source is an account of an event created by someone who took part in or witnessed the event.
-secondary source A secondary source is information gathered by someone who did not take part in or witnessed a event.

-values (ideas that people hold dear and try to live by.)


Stuff to Remember:
History and archaeology fields are similar by both studying the people and places of the past.
History can teach us about ourselves, others, and the world around us.
History can also help you learn about math, science, religion, governments, and many other topics.
Individuals and countries both benefit from the wisdom that history can teach.
Archaeologists study artifacts, and the places were they were found as well.
5,000 years ago people invented writing. They wrote laws, poems, speeches, battle plans, letters, contracts, and many more.
Writing Evolution: carvings in stone pillars, stamping in clay tablets, scribbling on turtle shells, using typewriters, and sending by computer.
Treaties, letters, diaries, laws, court documents, and royal documents, and royal commands, audio/video are all primary sources.
History textbooks, journal articles, and encyclopedias are all secondary sources.
Sometimes archaeologists must be careful handling artifacts.
Egyptian writing is a very valuable resource for history.
