วันที่ 2 กันยายน พ.ศ.2556 ไมโครซอฟท์ประกาศเข้าซื้อกิจการด้านโทรศัพท์ของโนเกียทั้งหมด ในราคา 7.17 พันล้านดอลลาร์สหรัฐ ซึ่งการเข้าซื้อครั้งนี้ทำให้หลายคนเข้าใจกันว่า ไมโครซอฟท์ซื้อกิจการทั้งหมดของโนเกีย แต่ในความเป็นจริงแล้ว ไมโครซอฟท์เข้าซื้อแค่กิจการโทรศัพท์และการขอใช้สิทธิบัตรต่างๆที่โนเกียเป็นเจ้าของอยู่ ส่วนกิจการที่ไมโครซอฟท์ไม่ได้ทำการซื้อจากโนเกีย ได้แก่

ความเป็นเจ้าของ "แบรนด์"
ในข้อตกลงเกี่ยวกับ ความเป็นเจ้าของ "แบรนด์" ถือว่ายังไม่ชัดเจนเท่าที่ควร แต่หลักๆที่โนเกียยังจะคงสิทธิในความเป็นเจ้าของต่อไปได้ แล้วในส่วนของกิจการโทรศัพท์ของโนเกียที่ไมโครซอฟท์ได้เข้าซื้อไป ได้แก่
สิทธิบัตร Qualcomm บางส่วน
สิทธิการใช้งาน HERE
สิทธิในแบรนด์ Lumia และ Asha ( Microsoft Lumia และ Microsoft Asha)
สิทธิใช้ชื่อแบรนด์ Nokia นาน 10 ปี
Stephen Elop และพนักงานจำนวน 32,000 คน
สำหรับเหตุผลที่ไมโครซอฟท์ เข้าซื้อกิจการด้านโทรศัพท์ของโนเกีย มีเหตุผล 2 ข้อ คือ
ส่วนแบ่งการตลาดของสมาร์ทโฟน
ส่งเสริมธุรกิจของไมโครซอฟท์
จากเหตุผลทั้ง 2 ข้อ ไมโครซอฟท์ คงต้องการดำเนินธุรกิจ เพื่อให้ตนสามารถเทียบเคียงได้กับ Apple และ Google ซึ่งเป็นทั้งเจ้าของฮาร์ดแวร์และซอฟต์แวร์ ไมโครซอฟท์มองถึงอนาคตของ เทคโนโลยีอื่นๆ ที่โนเกีย ถือของอยู่ เช่น กล้อง การสื่อสาร แผนที่ สิทธิบัตร ฯลฯ จะช่วยเสริมทัพให้กับ MS Office, Skype, Xbox Live, SkyDrive, Bing ได้อย่างแน่นอน
