Kata "riddle" menggambarkan sebuah pernyataan atau pertanyaan, yang secara langsung membutuhkan jawaban yang konkret. Jawaban sempurna sebuah riddle adalah dimana ketika makna tersembunyi dapat diuraikan.
Riddle mempunyai 2 jenis yaitu :
□ Enigma - riddle yang diekspresikan dengan metafora. Definisi metafora sendiri adalah suatu peletakan kedua dari makna asalnya, yaitu makna yang bukan mengunakan kata dalam arti sesungguhnya, melainkan sebagai kiasan yang berdasarkan persamaan dan perbandingan.
Contohnya :
Q : "Tiga mata, hanya itulah yang saya punya. Semua berbaris dengan rapih bersebelahan. Ketika saya marah, semuanya berhenti."
A : Traffic Light
Penjelasan :
"Tiga mata" bukan literal artinya. "Mata" biasa digambarkan bulat. Tiga mata, tiga bulatan. Bersebelahan. Jika "marah", berubah menjadi "merah". Semuanya berhenti. Maka jawabannya Traffic light, atau Lampu merah. Kata "marah" disini bukan digunakan untuk arti sesungguhnya, melainkan untuk memberikan gambaran warna "Merah".
□ Conundrum - Biasanya lebih tricky dan menggunakan permainan kata-kata
Contohnya :
Q : "What is the difference between a jeweler and a jailer?”
A: "One sells watches and the other watches cells.”
