The Berlin Airlift was a consequence of the Berlin Blockade which Stalin carried out in order to push the Berlin civilians out of Berlin. As a result of this was the Berlin Airlift. The Berlin Airlift was an 11 month ‘mission’ which took place in 1948-1949; the Western Allies flew over 2000 tonnes of food and supplies into Berlin. Due to the Western persistence, Stalin in 1949 in Moscow decided to remove the blockade. As a result of the Berlin Airlift, the formation of NATO came about. NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) was formed in order to provide collective security against the Soviet Union and the spread of Communism. Another consequence of the Berlin Airlift was the formation of the two German states, the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the Germany Democratic Republic (GDR). The FRG was supported by the West and the GDR was supported by the Stalin. After the birth of the two separate German states many inequalities began to arise, the western state was more prosperous than the Eastern state due to the Marshall Aid this lead to an growing economic gap. This ultimately lead to the many skilled Eastern state workers travelling to the Western state for a chance to earn more money and a better opportunity.
