Merpati dan dara termasuk dalam family Columbidae. Pada umumnya, kata "merpati" dan "dara" memiliki maksud yang sama tetapi dalam praktik ornitologi, merpati digunakan untuk spesies yang lebih besar sedangkan dara untuk spesies yang lebih kecil.
Merpati adalah burung berbadan gempal dengan leher pendek dan patuh ramping pendek dengan cere berair. Spesies ini membangun sangkarnya dari ranting dan menempatkannya pada pepojonan, birai atau tanah.
Spesies ini umumya mengerami satu atau dua telur. Kedua induk dari merpati sangat memedulikan anak-anaknya dan akan meninggalkan sangkarnya setelah usia anaknya 7 hingga 28 hari.
Makanan burung merpati berupa biji, buah dan tanaman. Spesies burung ini dapat menghasilkan susu tembolok, membuatnya beda dari spesies burung lainnya. Susu tembolok adalah zat bernutrisi tinggi yang nantinya akan diberikan untuk makanan anaknya.
Burung merpati sering dipakai sebagai sebagai lambang perdamaian oleh manusia. Menurut catatan sejarah, burunf ini juga dipakai untuk mengirim surat dengan mengikatkan surat di kakinya.
