Unit 2
First people to come here were the Vikings who came from Scandinavia this happened during the 800's. There was a skeleton found of a viking and it was a woman. They were known to have gone to war with their women because it is a waste to have them do nothing instead. They crafted seaworthy ships with their gods on them and went all the way across to what is now North America. When Marco Polo takes his trip he goes to china by land because nobody knows there is a water route yet. He goes the other way and lies saying he is an important adviser and after he wrote a book that inspired many other explorers to seek for wealth in China. They then learn about how rich and powerful the empire is due to their natural resources. Columbus misjudged the size of the earth and thought it would be shorter if he went all the way around the world. He goes to his death believing he found China.
There was three reasons that they would give Columbus a chance aside from the scientific proof they were also on a nationalistic high due to expelling all those non-christians.
1. God- Christianize colonies.
2. Glory- The fame of being associated with such a discovery.
3. Gold- Promise of gold from the voyage.
He sees and is welcomed by the Native Americans that are there. Columbus was given food and describes how they lived to them. He came back with many more ships and writes a book but the Spanish and Italians fight over who the real Columbus is.
Magellen steps forward in 1519 and says he will find a way through and gets the money for 5 ships and 243 men to do it. He left Spain and followed the coast of Africa and then broke off and sailed down the coast of south america and doesn't find a way through. Until he finds a narrow straight and is able to go through. The Panama Canal was build in 1911. After he is killed the men begin the long voyage home after being out for so long. They game back in 1522 and only 18 of the men survived. He never really landed anywhere he was mostly just sailing through a lot of water. But he didn't die in vein as he proves the earth is round.
in 1607 the British come to the colony of Jamestown
1620 they go to Plymouth
1625 they get to Boston
