A Comparison of Adjunct Therapies for Pain Management in Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients

Our group has decided on the symptom of “pain” for our research project. The research question we have chosen is: In rheumatoid arthritis patients, how does yoga therapy compare to massage therapy in pain management?
P (population) is rheumatoid arthritis patients
I (intervention) is yoga therapy
C (comparison intervention) is massage therapy
O (outcome) is pain management
Problem / Background:
- The problem / issue of uncontrolled pain in the rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patient remains to be a large problem despite many available pharmacologic treatments available.
- Many times, patients are reluctant to take multiple medications, and fear becoming addicted to pain medication (Fitzcharles, DaCosta, Ware, & Shir, 2009).
- Numerous adjunct therapies to pharmacologic treatments have been identified in the treatment of RA pain, such as yoga, herbal products, massage, acupuncture, and exercise (Durham, Fowler, Donato, Smith, & Jensen, 2015). However, the literature does not compare adjunct therapies and their effectiveness of pain control.
- Pain management in patients remain a high priority for nurses. Although nurses cannot prescribe medications for pain relief, they can provide information for adjunct therapies that are available. Bringing massage to the bedside in a stable patient could also be part of the future in pain management.
