Amisodorus mendeskripsikan Chimera dalam sub pembahasannya mengenai Echidna sebagai berikut : “Dia adalah ibu dari Chimera yang bernafas api, makhluk yang sangat perlu ditakuti, hebat, bergerak cepat, dan kuat.”
Chimera dirumorkan memiliki keturunan dari saudaranya, Orthrus yaitu Sphinx dan Singa Nemea. Chimera pada akhirnya berhasil ditaklukkan oleh Bellerophon dengan bantuan Pegasus atas perintah Raja Lycia, Raja Iobates setelah Chimera tersebut meneror perkampungan warga yang dekat dengan wilayah makhluk tersebut. Karena pegasus bisa terbang, Bellerophon dengan Pegasusnya mengalahkan Chimera dengan cara menembak Chimera tersebut dari udara agar dapat aman dari api dan kepala Chimera.
Di gunung Chimera yang terdapat di Lycia, dimana Chimera pernah dirumorkan tinggal disana, terdapat api abadi yang dijadikan petunjuk jalan oleh para pelaut dan pendaki gunung pada zaman kuno.
