Pada abad ke 8 - ke 7 SM, Theogony Hesiod menyebutkan bahwa Cerberus memiliki 50 kepala. Sedangkan Pindar pada tahun 522 hingga 443 SM memberikan Cerberus 100 kepala.
Cerberus ditaklukkan oleh Heracles dalam misi yang diterimanya dari Eurystheus, Raja dari Tiryns untuk membawa kembali Cerberus dari tangan Hades, sang penguasa Dunia Bawah.
