Bahasa Jerman merupakan bahasa resmi dan bahasa kerja di Uni Eropa, seperti Austria, Belgia, Italia(Tyrol Selatan), Jerman, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, dan Swiss.
Di Eropa Timur, bahasa ini merupakan bahasa asing kedua yang sangat luas dikenal. Beberapa daerah di Eropa Timur, zaman dahulu kala banyak dihuni oleh orang Jerman perantauan. Setelah Perang Dunia II sekitar 12-15 juta jiwa orang Jerman diusir dari Eropa Timur.
Di Perancis, bahasa ini dipertuturkan oleh sekitar dua juta jiwa penduduk negara ini, khususnya di daerah Alsace-Lorraine, tetapi tidak memiliki status bahasa resmi.
Di Amerika Serikat bahasa Jerman dialek Pfalz dipakai oleh orang-orang Amish. Di Patagonia (selatan Argentina) terdapat pula komunitas berbahasa Jerman. Namibia, sebagai satu-satunya bekas koloni Jerman di Afrika, juga menjadi tempat sisa-sisa komunitas berbahasa Jerman di Afrika.
Bahasa Jerman mempunyai 26 fonem yaitu 21 huruf mati dan 5 huruf hidup.
