Ada banyak variasi alphabet rune atau lebih dikenal dengan nama ’futhark’. Setiap versi memiliki nama, bentuk, arti, dan makna esoterik. Makna esoterik maksudnya adalah suatu hal yang diajarkan atau dapat dimengerti oleh sekelompok orang tertentu dan khusus, dapat juga berarti suatu hal yang susah untuk dipahami. Dan juga, kekuatan magis.
Tiga jenis alfabet rune yang paling dikenal oleh dunia modern yaitu Elder Futhark, Anglo-Saxon, dan Younger Futhark.
Elder Futhark atau Old Germanic Rune, merupakan versi tertua dari alfabet rune.
Ini juga termasuk ke dalam rumpun bahasa Proto-Germanic, Gothic, serta Alamannic. Futhark ini diturunkan dari alfabet Italia lama, serta digunakan oleh bangsa-bangsa Germanic. Pada abad ke-2 hingga ke-8, rune ini digunakan sebagai ukiran pada artifak dan batu rune. Huruf-huruf-nya adalah 'f', 'u', 'th', 'a', 'r' dan 'k'. Elder Futhark, memiliki dua puluh empat simbol. Simbol-simbol itu kemudian terbagi menjadi tiga grup berisi delapan simbol rune yang disebut Aett. Dalam bentuk jamak, dibaca Aettir.
Aettir sering diasosiasikan dengan dewa tertentu. Dewa tersebut adalah Aett Freya, Aett Hagalaz, dan Aett Tyr. Dalam beberapa tradisi tiga kelompok dan delapan simbol rune, khusus 'Aettir', diberi nama setelah dewa mitologi Nordik; Freja, Hagal dan Tyr.
