Kegiatan ini telah dilakukan manusia jauh sebelum berkembangnya peradaban awal, tetapi karena tidak dapat menulis maka tidak ada yg dapat terekam dalam catatan. Setelah pertanian berkembang sekitar 8rb hingga 10rb tahun SM mulailah dirasakan kebutuhan untuk memenuhi irama permusiman. Hal ini dimaksudkan agar mereka dapat bercocok tanam di saat yg tepat.
Peradaban pertama yang dikenal ialah Babylonia dan Assyria. Keduanya berkembang di daerah subur yg dikenal dengan Mesopotamia (diantara sungai), yaitu diantara sungai Tigrid dan Eufrat.
Mereka meninggalkan beberapa catatan Astronomi sekitar 3000 SM. Beberapa diantranya telah menggambarkan tanda-tanda bintang (zodiak), sama seperti yang digunakan sekarang. Bangsa Babylonia juga mempelajari angkasa untuk memahami kehendak dewa-dewa dan juga untuk tujuan praktis. Dari situlah ilmu-ilmu astronomi dimulai yang sampai sekarang masih banyak penganut.
