"When there is no enemy within, the enemies outside can not hurt you" - Winston Churchill. The implications of this quote could be observed in the recent phenomenon known as supra-nationalism, where countries surrender a degree of national sovereignty to an international agency for the collective common good. The most conspicuous example of supra-nationalism nowadays is the European Union, a political and economic union of 28 countries. In recent years, some countries like the UK have been placing profound pressure on the EU in order to leave or renegotiate the union. However, negotiations to leave a supranational framework will have deteriorating effects on the leaving country most of the time. Modern nation-states should follow in the footsteps of the EU and largely abandoning national interests to the fullest extent to bolster their economy, foster peace and establish more rights and opportunities for their citizens.
