1. Bajasa yang merupakan anggota bahasa Jermanik Barat yang dipakai sebagai bahasa pengantar terutama di kawasan eropa Tengah.
2. Bahasa Jerman ditulis menggunakan aksara Latin. Sebagai tambahan dari ke-26 huruf yang ada terdapat tiga simbol untuk vokal dengan umlaut: ä, ö dan ü, ditambah Eszett atau "s tajam": ß. Eszett tidak dipakai di Swiss dan digantikan dengan s rangkap, "ss". Apabila alat penulisan tidak memiliki simbol-simbol tambahan tersebut, ä, ö, dan ü masing-masing dapat digantikan dengan "ae", "oe", dan "ue", serta ß digantikan dengan "ss" (sebagaimana digunakan di Swiss).
3. Karena bahasa Jerman bukanlah bahasa yang tunggal, melainkan bahasa dengan banyak variasi: mulai dari dialek tempatan (lokal, berdasarkan geografi penuturnya), dialek temporal (dikenal paling tidak tiga versi dialek temporal), hingga dialek sosial (berdasarkan kelompok sosial penuturnya) dan karena bahasa jerman memiliki bahasa baku/standard yang disebut Hochdeutsch ("Jerman Tinggi") atau Standarddeutsch, yang merupakan bahasa yang diajarkan di sekolah dan kursus bahasa serta luas dipakai sebagai bahasa sastra.
