1. Bahssa jerman adalah semua bahasa yang telah mengalami pergeseran bunyi Germanik kedua. Yg memiliki 26 fonem yaitu 21 huruf mati dan 5 huruf hidup. Di samping itu sistem tata bahasanya sederhana.
2. Bahasa Jerman ditulis menggunakan aksara Latin. Sebagai tambahan dari ke-26 huruf yang ada terdapat tiga simbol untuk vokal dengan umlaut: ä, ö dan ü, ditambah Eszett atau "s tajam": ß. Eszett tidak dipakai di Swiss dan digantikan dengan s rangkap, "ss". Apabila alat penulisan tidak memiliki simbol-simbol tambahan tersebut, ä, ö, dan ü masing-masing dapat digantikan dengan "ae", "oe", dan "ue", serta ß digantikan dengan "ss" (sebagaimana digunakan di Swiss). Dalam kamus-kamus masa kini entri dengan umlaut diperlakukan sama dengan huruf induknya sedangkan dalam kamus lama biasanya ia diperlakukan seperti huruf induk yang diikuti dengan "e".
3.Dalam kontinuum variasi bahasa di Eropa Tengah bagian utara, "bahasa Jerman" adalah semua bahasa yang telah mengalami pergeseran bunyi Germanik kedua. Dengan demikian, ke dalam lingkup ini masuk berbagai bahasa yang dipakai di Jerman selatan, sehingga bahasa Jerman dikenal pula sebagai bahasa Jerman Hulu.
