* Located between 23'3” to 30'12” north latitude and 69'30” to 78'17” east longitudes.
* It has Haryana and Delhi in north East, MP in south east, Gujarat in south, Punjab in North, Pakistan in West, UP in east.
* Length is 826 kms from north to south and 869 kms from east to west. Boundary is 5920 kms long.
* Largest state of India comprising 3,42,239 sq. km. area (10.41%) followed by MP, Maharashtra, UP and Gujarat.
* When compared to Countries Rajasthan is five times bigger than Sri lanka, three times bigger than Czechoslovakia, seventeen times than Israel and almost double of England. Almost equal to Japan and Germany.
* It has 1070 kms International boundary shared with Pakistan.

formation of rajasthan:

* The task of building current day rajasthan started in 1948 and completed in 1956.
* Alwar, Bharatpur, Dholpur and Karauli Initiated the process by establishing **Matsya Sangh** on 17 march 1948 by making Maharaja of Dholpur as its rajpramukh and Alwar as capital.
* On 25 march 1948 Banswara, Kushalgarh, Bundi, Dungarpur, Jhalawar, Kishangarh, Kota. Pratapgarh, Shahpura and Tonk princely states formed a separate Union called as **Former Rajasthan **by making Maharaja of Kota as its rajpramukh and Kota as its capital.
* on 18 april 1948 princely state of udaipur was amalgamated with former rajasthan and named the union **United Rajasthan** and maharaj of udaipur made its rajpramukh and udaipur was the capital.
* On 30 march 1949 **Greater Rajasthan Union** was established by combining Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur and Jaipur with United Rajasthan by making Maharana of Udaipur as maharaj pramukh, king of jaipur as rajpramukh, and king of kota as up rajpramukh as jaipur its capital. It was inaugurated by Sardar Patel on March 30 1949. **Heeralal Shastri was made first Chief Minister of the Union of Greater Rajasthan.**
* A commission was appointed under the chairmanship of Shri shanker Rao Deo to ascertain whether or not people of matsya sangh wants to join the Greater rajasthan union as kings of alwar and karauli wants to join and kings of bharatpur and dholpur was showing unwillingness. On the recommendation of the said commission Govt. of India ordered to merge matsya sangh into union. On **15th may 1949 United Greater Rajasthan** formed by merging both.
* The lone remaining princely state sirohi came under the Indian Union by way of contract on 26th jan 1950, **on same day United greater rajasthan was named Rajasthan Forever and kept under 'B' schedule of states.**
* State reorganisation commission, which was set up by GOI, submitted its report in 1955 to Govt and suggested to reorganise boundaries of Indian states to fome 16 states and 3 UTs.
* The Govt. of India passed state reorganisation act on recommendations of the commission which came into effect from 1st nov. 1956. In accordance with this act Ajmer Merwara, Abu tehsil and sunnel tapppa of bhanpura tehsil in Mandsaur district was merged with Rajasthan and Sironj subdivision of kota district merged with Central India(Current day MP). Same day Rajasthan was placed in list of 'A' category of states.
* Initially Rajasthan has 27 states. In view of development three new districts Dausa, Baran and Rajsamand were created in 10.4.1991. Hanumangarh was created as 31st district on 12.4.94, Karauli was created as 32nd district in 1997 and Pratapgarh was created as 33rd district on 26th Jan. 2008.


* The commissionery system which was abandoned in 1962 was re-enforced in 1987 by state govt.
* Rajasthan state is divided into 7 Offices of Commissioners:

1. Jaipur: Jaipur, Dausa, Alwar, Sikar, Jhunjhunu Districts.
2. Jodhpur: Jodhpur, Jalore, Pali, Barmer, Sirohi, Jaisalmer.
3. Ajmer: Ajmer, Nagaur, Bhilwara and Tonk.
4. Kota: Kota, Bundi, Baran, Jhalawar.
5. Udaipur: Udaipur, Rajsamand, Chittorgarh, Banswara, Dungarpur, Pratapgarh.
6. Bikaner: Bikaner, Hanumangarh, Ganganagar, Churu.
7. Bharatpur: Bharatpur, Karauli. Sawai madhopur, Dholpur.
