Em janeiro de 1928 Tarsila deu de presente ao seu marido, o escritor Oswald de Andrade, uma obra para impressioná-lo. Muito empolgado disse que era o melhor quadro que ela já tinha feito e o batizaram com as palavras indígenas ‘Aba’, que significa homem e ‘poru’, que é o homem que come carne humana. Abaporu significa o antropófago. Em seguida Oswald escreveu o Manifesto Antropófago e iniciou o Movimento Antropofágico inspirados na obra. Este é o quadro mais importante da arte brasileira.
