Meski bernama Fire Crab (Kepiting Api), hewan ini menyerupai kura-kura besar dengan tempurung dipenuhi batu-batu permata. Di tempat asalnya, Fiji, sebentang pantai telah diubah menjadi cagar alam untuk melindunginya, bukan hanya dari para Muggle yang mungkin akan tergoda dengan tempurungnya yang berharga. Melainkan juga dari para penyihir jahat yang memanfaatkan tempurungnya sebagai kuali bernilai tinggi. Walau demikian, kepiting api punya mekanisme pertahanan sendiri, bila diserang, hewan ini menembakkan lidah api dari ekornya. Kepiting api bisa diekspor sebagai hewan peliharaan dengan surat izin khusus. Terdapat beberapa jenis Kepiting Api yang berbeda yang dapat diidentifikasi dengan batu permata pada cangkang mereka. Jenis batu permata tersebut antara lain adalah Ruby, Sapphire, dan Emerald.
Ciri-ciri Fire Crab:
- Memiliki enam kaki
- Cangkang yang berat dihiasi oleh permata, dengan warna dan jenis yang berbeda
- Bentuknya menyerupai kura-kura
Kementerian Sihir menyatakan bahwa seorang penyihir yang kompeten harus dapat mengatasi hewan ini. Pada saat Harry Potter berada di Hogwarts di tahun kelima, untuk ujian Satwa Gaib, mereka harus menunjukkan bagaimana cara memberi makan dan membersihkan kandang Fire Crab tanpa mengalami luka bakar yang serius.
