Azkaban adalah penjara Kementerian Sihir yang diperuntukkan bagi pelaku-pelaku kejahatan di dunia sihir, terutama dalam hal penggunaan tiga Kutukan Tak Termaafkan.
Penjara ini dikenal dengan penjara yang nyaris tidak bisa ditembus dan sulit melarikan diri darinya karena penjara ini dijaga ketat oleh dementor-dementor. Dan berbagai macam kutukan-kutukan menyelimuti penjara ini.
Beberapa tawanan yang pernah ditawan di penjara adalah :
1. Bellatrix Lestrange,
2. Sirius Black,
3. Hagrid,
4. Lucius Malfoy,
5. Antonin Dolohov, dll.
Menurut Remus Lupin, banyak narapidana Azkaban menjadi gila dan memutuskan berhenti makan atau bunuh diri atau mati perlahan karena kehilangan harapan.
Azkaban terdapat di sebuah pulau kecil di tengah samudra jauh di Utara sana. Sirius Black pernah mencoba melarikan diri dari penjara ini untuk bertemu Harry. Dulu Sirius bertransformasi menjadi seekor anjing ketika dementor membawakannya makanan. Dengan keadaannya dalam wujud binatang, ia dapat menyelinap dari jeruji besi kemudian berenang ke pantai dan sampailah ke Hogwarts.
Kebanyakan tawanan Azkaban berasal dari pengikut Voldemort. Dan setiap Voldemort bangkit, mereka semua mencoba meloloskan diri dari sana.
