Holocaust :
Systematic state-sponsored persecution and murder of about 6 million Jews. -Nazis
1933-1945

1930s:
More people were unemployed in Germany than the U.S. 42% unemployment rate. Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in 1933 and said he would make the people proud of Germany once again and give them a better life. He said that Jews were the real problem.
Hitler declared a "state-of-emergency" and took away people's rights. There was no privacy. Nazi police could open anyone's mail, listen to any phone calls, and search people's homes.

Books that "enemies" (people who spoke out against the Nazi agenda) were burned.

Hitler wanted to create a master race called Aryans.

Many people tried to leave Germany but found no refuge.
Jewish people had their rights taken away. Their citizenship was revoked, they were kicked out of schools, doctors or lawyers weren't allowed to continue working, and there were signs at benches and beaches that said Jews weren't allowed to be there.

People joined or helped the Nazi party because their life began to improve. Those who disagreed with the party received less food than the people who agreed. Children were also supposed to join "Hitler Youth" to learn to become a Nazi.

Nazi used mass media to hurt certain groups of people. They also spread propaganda to gain support for the German people.

November 1938: Kristallnacht-
The government was using violence against Jews. They destroyed Jewish businesses, synagogues, and homes. These two days of destruction are called Kristallnacht.

1939-1942
WW2, The Final Solution.

In 1938, Germany invaded Poland and started World War 2. They took over in a few days. Jews had to wear a Star of David and live in ghettos. In 1942, fifteen Nazi officials met up in Wannsee and came up with a final solution- kill all of the Jews.
