After just a couple of weeks, I feel like I live here and am not just visiting – another testament to the effect that architecture has on us; how it welcomes us into a space. I believe that the connection that classical architecture has to nature has everything to do with being human, and this is why natural beauty trumps everything else. Our visit to Amsterdam – arriving at Amsterdam immediately impresses on you the majestic impact of its days of glory and one can imagine the inevitable awe that would have been a daily experience of the residents and visitors to Amsterdam. The architecture is spectacular and is a testament to the superior skill of the craftsmen of the time, with impeccable attention to detail and the timeless beauty and stability of classical architecture. ’; on the first day of class and we were introduced to Utrecht via a walking tour where we were treated to the rich classical architecture that anchors the city to its history and establishes the spirit of the space. This program allowed me to experience so many things, many of which added impetus to my desire to pursue urbanism in the future, and I am truly grateful to everyone who helped make this program a reality.
The summer school “Let’s Build A Beautiful City”, organized in Utrecht by INTBAU Netherlands from July 18 to August 4, was a magnificent experience from start to finish. Focused mainly on issues of New Urbanism and the design of new neighborhoods with human and traditional qualities, it was a very complete and enriching summer school. Being sixteen years old and incredibly interested in urbanism and architecture, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t spend quite a bit of time thinking of how I should pursue these fields in the future.
Furthermore, Molenaar is a member of the editorial board of the American journal HERD (Healing Environment Research and Development. The bicycle parking facility of WTC Utrecht is linked to that of Utrecht Central Station. Because the façade is modular, composed of an aluminum frame with black aluminum panels and stainless-steel strips, the construction time of the new WTC was significantly shortened – a hugely important factor in such a busy, central location. Moreover, due to more limited tolerances or error possibilities, a fantastically tight result has been achieved.
Again, variety is a key consideration, and the office floors are designed to house smaller companies and start-ups, as well as established businesses. The new design, by Maarten van Kesteren, a young architect based in The Hague, is about opening up and connections and making a shared container for the multifarious creativity of the students. The “whole school has a feeling that you are part of a lively workshop”, as Van Kesteren puts it. The detail is simple, with what Kempinga calls “very beautiful pure materials that are unusual in school buildings”, such as an oak floor whose woody smell mixes with that of the workshops.

Both Utrecht and Glasgow serve as examples of a style of building that developed much further and was made much bigger in another place. https://calendly.com/architectutrecht/30min , a collaboration between Flux and Studioninedots, commissioned by AM Gebiedsontwikkeling, was completed in October 2023. The building features a large open plinth connected to a green industrial yard, a green and water-buffering courtyard and a communal roof garden, all linked by the surrounding colonnade. The plans aim to capture the spirit of Utrecht, bringing a sense of warmth and fun to the square. Nicknamed Oopen, the building is a colourful collection of diverse cylinders, a design that stands out against the backdrop of conventionally angular buildings in the neighbourhood.
Stefano Boeri Architetti’s Tower is defined by angular forms and repeating horizontal lines, whereas MVSA Architect s’ tower features smoothly curving corners and a vertical rhythm. Both towers share abundant green elements and a clear structure of terrace-like, stepped levels, clearly articulating the various aspects of the program – offices, residential and public and commercial spaces – over a combined total floor space of 65,000 m2. My experience during this program is best exemplified by two themes, variety and exposure. Commissioned by the Municipality of Eindhoven, Flux has spent the past few months working on a spatial design and implementation agenda for the Stadsdommel in Eindhoven.
It is also less than half the cost of an equivalent new building, with 30% of the carbon footprint. Utrecht Central Station is now a single, light filled, easily navigable space. The spacious main concourse is a covered city square which connects the front to the back of the station, and which – because of the paving stones and the type of illumination that has been used – feels more like an outside urban environment than a building. Since the station has been separated from Hoog Catharijne shopping mall, and thanks to the clear signposting, travellers now find the historic city within easy reach. The building is flanked by two city squares – open spaces that ensure that the city and the station complex flow seamlessly into one another. The new station is clearly visible in the heart of the city, with two distinctive and accessible entrances, leading to and from the Jaarbeurs (Exhibition Centre) and city centre.
During this year’s children’s book week Wonderwoods had the mayor of Utrecht Jan van Zanen read The Adventures of Woody the Nuthatch to the children of public school ‘De Koekoek’ in Utrecht. The application of game thinking to bring about behavior change by using game-elements and structures to make pre-existing tasks more fun and stimulating. The curved corners and rounded ‘kinks’ ensure a completely consistent façade language. The top floor has extra height, allowing the roof structure to be loftier than usual and providing added allure.
In winter, they’ll shield the buildings – and streets below – from winds.
Nowhere is an astounding active experience for the general public, playfully triggering the senses and powered by cutting-edge technology. Immersed by highly sensory and interactive art exhibitions and installations, audiences discover the impact of emerging technologies and scientific breakthroughs on their life. Renovatie is an Urban rising from the ground, respecting and enhancing the sizes of the building envelop.
