The frames are placed behind the masonry and the reveals are finished with metal flashing. In this way, too, the design is based on preserving the building's characteristics by not causing any disruption by adding the new time layer. By preserving the quality of the church and adding a new yet modest program, the residential building will also stand the test of time in the future. The new program is located behind the existing column structure and has wide galleries at the entrance. The facades of the houses are made of materials that elaborate on the existing robust character of the church.
He is a member of the board of directors of the Bayside District, a volunteer organization overseeing the Third Street Promenade. The preservation of this characteristic has been our starting point for the redevelopment. We have managed to keep the characteristic void by placing the new program of small residential units entirely in the two side aisles. The empty nave in turn serves as an extension of the house, offering room for work or relaxation.

The gently sloping landscape, designed by Studio REDD, extends to the facade and includes a wadi seeded with wildflowers. This wadi serves not only as an aesthetic element but also functions as a Water Drainage and Infiltration system, capturing and infiltrating rainwater into the ground instead of directly draining into the sewer system. This contributes to reducing flood risks and promoting a healthier ecosystem while sustainably connecting with the campus and the natural environment.

We designed one big table formed out of four pieces, which can be moved and used by small groups. The StemmingMakerij on the first floor is a multifunctional space for presentations. For the client, it was important this space stimulated discussion, so we provided a circular seating layout where someone can stand in the centre surrounded by their audience.
In the shared office space, a central sunken pit that previously stored oil for the locomotive hall is transformed with a two-storey bright orange furniture element. It turns the pit into sitting stairs for presentations and lectures, leading to the floor below, and extends above the office floor to provide a quiet mezzanine working area. Powerhouse Company has completed its design for A Circular Cube, the Netherlands’ first mass timber university building.
The roof is more than 9 metres above ground level, and also floats a little bit above the adjacent buildings. On Peter Vreedeplein, the roof becomes a large canopy with a more closed appearance of aluminium sheeting and a number of small roof lights. A number of large-scale projects are taking place in Tilburg to make the city centre more attractive.One of these changes is a new connection between Heuvelstraat and Pieter Vreedeplein. Octatube was closely involved in the design and realisation of the spectacular new wavy roof.
Smart solutionsNew to this design are the connections between the mounting frames that form the canopy. We have designed the connections ourselves, so that there are no bolts in sight and there is no need to weld them on site. We did not only design the constructive details, we also consulted with the architect and translated their wishes. In addition, we also have prefabricated as much as possible in our factory so that it could be installed quickly and efficiently at the construction site. The undulating canopy is 55 metres long and consists of a diamond-shaped grid of steel strips and glass panels.
The café, on the other hand, is left unheated, since visitors don’t stay there for particularly long periods. The StemmingMakerij, an enclosed presentations space on the first floor that can accommodate up to 60 people, is also heated separately. The technique is successful and the building’s climate doesn’t feel at all uncomfortable, with temperatures ranging from 16 to 22°C. MultidisciplinaryThanks to close collaboration between architect, structural engineer, and installation consultant, the Marga Klompé Building has been realized, with innovative solutions leading to an optimal result. The lecture halls above the large halls have impressive spans of 9.2 meters, achieved with CLT ribbed floors.
